Hill Valley had experienced growth in its surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs. Downtown was less vibrant as commercial interests moved out around the Twin Pines Mall area, on the former site of Twin Pines Ranch, as well as former residential areas of town (see John F. Kennedy Drive). A community known as Hilldale was beginning construction.

Back to the Future, was initially released to theaters in the United States on July 3, 1985, almost four months in advance of the date in which the beginning of the movie takes place. It was also released in Australia, West Germany and Italy in advance of the "present" date depicted in the film.
