- " The video image [of Ronald Reegan] flickered and shifted, turning into this old guy with a beard and turban. It was the Ayatollah Khomeini! / "No!" the Ayatollah screamed. "It is the Great Satan Special! I demand you have tofu!" "
- —From Back to the Future Part II by Craig Shaw Gardner (quote, page 28)
The Ayatollah Khomeini (actual name Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini) (September 24, 1902 - June 3, 1989) was an Iranian religious leader and politician, and leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution which saw the overthrow of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the late Shah of Iran.
Biography[]
Following the revolution and a national referendum, Khomeini became the country's Supreme Leader — a position created in the constitution as the highest ranking political and religious authority of the nation, until his death.
In 2015, a video simulacrum of Khomeini appeared as a video waiter in the Cafe 80's, instructing viewers about their choices for the diner's specials. It rather rudely interrupted the simulacrum of Ronald Reagan which greeted Marty McFly, insisting that he try the Hostage Special.
Behind the scenes[]
- In Craig Shaw Gardner's novelization (see Quote above), the Ayatollah Khomeini simulcram demanded the customer have tofu.
