バック・トゥ・ザ・フューチャー, transliterated into Romaji pronunciation as "Bakku tu za fyucha", was the Japanese title for Back to the Future. The film was released in Japan with subtitles on December 7, 1985. On December 18, 2020, the re-release of the TV Asahi Japanese-dubbed version concluded in Japanese theaters. A week later, on December 25, a subtitled version began screening and continued until January 8, 2021. The film was re-released again nationwide from October 25 to 31, 2024. Its third nationwide re-release took place from December 12 to 18, 2025, presented in IMAX and 4DX formats.
The film has been dubbed into Japanese by several different companies over the years.
- A television dub first aired on TV Asahi on February 5, 1989, featuring Yuji Mitsuya as Marty and Takanobu Hozumi as Doc.
- A digital version, released on VHS on August 1, 1990, featured Koichi Yamadera as Marty and Takeshi Aono as Doc. This version was also used in Back to the Future: The Ride, and is considered the official version.
- On April 20, 1990, Fuji TV broadcast another dub, with Yuji Oda as Marty and Yuji Miyake as Doc. This version was produced for Part I only.
- On August 8, 2014 BS Japan broadcast a different dub, with Ichirota Miyakawa as Marty and Koichi Yamadera as Doc. On June 27, 2018, an upgraded version was broadcast featuring re-recorded dialogue for the scene where Marty tries to tell Doc about the future at the clock tower and the scene where Doc is shot dead by The Libyans.
- On February 7, 2025, Nippon TV aired a version with Mamoru Miyano as Marty and Koichi Yamadera voicing Doc for the second time.

- Doc's exclamation “Great Scott!” is translated as “Nantekotta!”(なんてこった！) or “Nantekotoda!”(なんてことだ！) , both meaning “Oh my God!”
- Biff’s term “Butthead” is translated as "Manuke" (まぬけ) or "Bonkura" (ぼんくら), both colloquial terms meaning “idiot” or “fool.”
- “Flux capacitor” is rendered as “Jigentennisouchi” (次元転移装置), meaning “dimensional transfer device.”
- The speed “88 miles per hour” is changed to 140 kilometers per hour to match the metric system.
- George McFly’s mistaken line “I’m your density” (a malapropism of “destiny”) is translated using unmei (運命, “destiny”) and unten (運転, “driving”), playing on the pun in a localized way.
- The line “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.” is translated in some versions as “Nanigotomo naseba naru” (何事も為せば成る).
- “Chicken,” as an insult, is translated to “Koshinuke” (腰抜け), meaning “coward.”
