Doc Brown discussing Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea with Clara Clayton in 1885.

"So do I. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, my absolute favorite. The first time I read that, when I was a little boy, I wanted to meet Captain Nemo!"
—Doc Brown discussing his love for Jules Verne.

Captain Nemo was a fictional character, and the antagonist in Jules Verne's 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

After having first read the novel as a little boy, Dr. Emmett Brown had wanted to meet Captain Nemo, and mentioned as such while discussing the story with Clara Clayton on September 5, 1885.

Why Doc had wanted to meet Nemo, who was after all a villain, remains unclear. But then, if one thinks about it, Doc was a man who made a deal with Libyan terrorists to obtain the plutonium he needed to power his DeLorean time machine.

Behind the scenes

  • Captain Nemo's name means "no-one" in Latin; and is also the Latin rendering of the Ancient Greek pseudonym Outis.
