Copernicus was a crater on the Moon, named after the famed scientist Nicolaus Copernicus.
When Dr. Emmett Brown and Clara Clayton were looking at the Moon and the stars with her telescope on September 5, 1885, Clara pointed Copernicus out to Doc and mentioned that as a child, she had called the crater Little Sunshine before finding out later that it already had a name. Doc agreed with Clara that Copernicus did look like a little sun.
