Cyrene is a city in Libya. Eratosthenes the Greek mathematian of the 3rd Century B.C, was born there and was later known as Eratosthenes of Cyrene. Doc Brown named his first son, born in 1886, Jules Eratosthenes Brown.
Behind the scenes[]
The irony of Doc Brown naming his son for a Libyan is something that was probably not contemplated by the writers for the animated series.
