"Is that a Devo suit?"
—Marty McFly
" "What's with the Devo suit?" Marty asked. / No respect, Doc Brown thought. He'd gone to so much trouble preparing an appropriate outfit for the occasion and this young man called it a Devo suit. "
—From Back to the Future by George Gipe (quote, page 46)

Devo (occasionally stylicized DEVO or DEV-O) was an American post-punk musical group from Akron, Ohio, known for songs such as "Whip It" and "Girl U Want." They enjoyed mainstream success mainly in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

History

Marty McFly appeared to be a fan of Devo, as when he met Dr. Emmett Brown at Twin Pines Mall on October 26, 1985, Doc emerged from the DeLorean time machine in a radiation suit, which was similar to Devo's trademark bright yellow one-piece outfits they were known for wearing in music videos and live performances.

Doc's wearing of this protective clothing prompted Marty to ask, "Is that a Devo suit?"

Behind the scenes

  • Though Devo is mainly known for its success in the 1980s, the band is still active and released their first new album in twenty years in 2010, Something for Everybody.
