1985 Doc stands beside his bicycle in Courthouse Square in 1955, observing the flatbed trailer with the tarpaulin-covered DeLorean aboard (on the far right).

"There it was, the wire running down from the clock tower [of the Hill Valley Courthouse] to the lamppost, and the toolbox on the trailer, sitting next to the DeLorean hidden under the tarpaulin. It gave Doc a thrill just to see everything set up again. Wasn't science wonderful?"
—From Back to the Future Part II by Craig Shaw Gardner (quote, page 162)

A flatbed trailer was a motorless vehicle designed to be towed behind another, motorized vehicle.

History

Emmett Brown owned a flatbed trailer in 1955, towed behind his Packard, which was used by himself and Marty McFly on November 5 to transport the DeLorean time machine — concealed beneath a tarpaulin — to his lab, and to Courthouse Square on the night of the Hill Valley Thunderstorm, November 12, for Doc's 'weather experiment'.

During Doc and Marty's second visit to 1955, on November 12, Doc saw the trailer with the tarpaulin-covered DeLorean aboard as he arrived in Courthouse Square by bicycle. The Packard was not present at the time, as 1955 Doc had let Marty's earlier self borrow it to take Lorraine Baines to the Enchantment Under the Sea at Hill Valley High School.
