Marty with Frisbee

Marty with a Frisbie Pie Company tin.

"Marty looked down at the pie plate still in his hands. He whipped it at Tannen with his best frisbee toss. And the plate sailed straight and true, right into Tannen's gun hand! / The gun went off. Buford's gang backed off as the bullet sailed through Doc's hat."
—From Back to the Future Part III by Craig Shaw Gardner (quote, page 128)

The Frisbie Pie Company was a business firm in Bridgeport, Connecticut which was founded in 1871 and delivered baked goods in the United States geographical region of New England.

History

One of the firm's pie tins — which were embossed FRISBIE'S PIES on the inside — turned up at the Hill Valley Festival on September 5, 1885, having presumably been brought to California in a bundle of household goods, where it was discovered by Marty McFly.

When Buford Tannen attempted to shoot Dr. Emmett Brown with a derringer, which Marshal James Strickland had missed during his security checks, as Buford had hidden the small single-shot pistol in his hat, Marty saved Doc's life by throwing the empty pie tin in the style of a frisbee — deflecting Buford's aim and causing the derringer to go off harmlessly in the air, thus wasting his only shot.

At the same time, Marty possibly gave history regarding the invention of the plastic flying disc a push in the right direction.

In the 1931B timeline, Edna Strickland had a FRISBIE'S PIES tin rigged up to some other objects on a clothesline to serve as an alarm against anyone entering her house.

Behind the scenes

  • On page 128 of the novelization (see Quote above), a misprint resulted in the line Buford's gang backed off as the bullet sailed through Doc's hat reading 'Buford's gangs backed off' instead, which makes no sense in the context of the story. This error has been corrected here.
