The access port for the fuel chamber atop the DeLorean.
The fuel chamber of the DeLorean time machine held the plutonium and later garbage that powered the flux capacitor. It was accessible via a circular port on the rear of the car.
The fuel chamber is not to be confused with the fuel tank.
It was lead lined when plutonium was the power source of temporal displacement to protect others from the hazardous radiation it emmited.
Behind the scenes
The base of the DeLorean's fuel chamber was constructed from a hubcap of a Dodge Polara.
