Dr. Emmett Brown, otherwise known as Herbert George.

Herbert George was an alias used by Dr. Emmett Brown, which was derived from the first and middle names of the science-fiction author H.G. Wells.

History[]

After Doc returned to Hill Valley on January 11, 1951 and moved into his late father's home at 1640 Riverside Drive, he used the 'Herbert George' alias in a published letter to the Editor of the Hill Valley Telegraph to ensure privacy while carrying out research and conducting experiments.

In the letter, Doc dropped hints about his work that were designed to protect his property.[1]

The letter[]

Dear Editor,

I am writing to report strange goings-on at 1640 Riverside Drive. I have come to understand that its resident, Emmett Brown, is a scientist who worked on the Manhattan Project and helped develop the atomic bomb. While walking my dog, I have seen flickering lights and have heard strange noises coming from the house. As of last week, my dog no longer will go near that property. I have heard rumors that several scientists are developing a death ray for the government, and that might be the reason. Regardless, I will be staying away from the 1600 block of Riverside Drive for the foreseeable future, and I urge my neighbors to do the same.

Sincerely,

Herbert George
