By the 1980s, the Essex Theater was turned into an adult movie house that was open 24 hours a day. The Hill Valley Theatre, on the other hand, showed films to general audiences during this period.

In 1984, Marty McFly and Jennifer Parker saw a Clint Eastwood film on their first date. In 1992, the Hill Valley Theatre was showing Back to the Future.
