"Meanwhile, Doc Brown was in the process of stringing one final strand of cable between the two lamp posts. As he went merrily about his work on municipal property, a cop meandered over from the Bank of America to watch. / "Oh-oh," Marty whispered as he came out of the cafe. "That's all we need now, is some meddling flatfoot." "
—From Back to the Future by George Gipe (quote, page 196)

A policeman patrolled Hill Valley in 1955.

History[]

On the night of the Hill Valley Thunderstorm on November 12, 1955, the policeman patrolled Courthouse Square and found Emmett Brown hooking together some cables. Doc told him it was a "weather experiment" and that under the tarpaulin on the flatbed trailer was "extremely sensitive weather equipment", preventing the officer from finding the DeLorean time machine.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The policeman can also be seen when Marty first walks into Courthouse Square in 1955.
  • In footage deleted from the finished film, but reinstated for George Gipe's novelization, Doc hands the officer a bribe. The officer asks, "You're not going to set anything on fire this time, are you, Doc?" Doc gives it some thought and answers, in the negative, "Naahh."
  • In more deleted footage, after Marty reads the date on the November 5, 1955 newspaper, he thinks he's dreaming and asks a lady to pinch him. She slaps him instead, and when the officer approaches, Marty hands him the paper and walks over to Lou's Cafe.
