"Doc Brown looked up [from looking inside the DeLorean time machine]. "Fascinating device, that camera," he said matter-of-factly. "I can't believe it's made in Japan." "

Doc: "No wonder this circuit failed; it says 'Made in Japan'."
Marty: "What do you mean, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan."

Japan is a nation in Asia. By 2015, Japanese culture was extremely influential in the United States of America.

History

The time circuit control microchip was manufactured in Japan, although it is likely that it was heavily modified by Dr. Emmett Brown. The 1955 version of Doc could not believe that the part originated from Japan, because goods imported from Japan at the time were generally cheap and of low quality. He considered the part a piece of junk, and then was surprised when Marty McFly told him that (in 1985), Japan made all the best stuff.

On February 18, 1984, the video game Wild Gunman was released for the Nintendo Famicom, which was the Japanese equivalent of the Nintendo Entertainment System.

According to the Newsline column on the front page of the October 22, 2015 issue of USA Today, the Tokyo stocks were up, "averaging a 1 point increase in rally".

Trivia

  • In actuality, starting around 1991 Japan entered a period of economic stagnation ("The Lost Decades") when its asset price bubble began to burst. As of 2012, the country still has not fully recovered from its early 1990s crash. This makes the common sci-fi convention of the time of Japan surpassing the U.S. as a Superpower particularly ironic.

Behind the scenes

Real-world

  • The auto manufacturing company Toyota originated from Japan.
