A lab coat (also sometimes referred to as white coat) was a long white garment worn by scientists or laboratory workers to protect their everyday clothing from damage or spillage, and also served as a uniform.
History
Bill Nye, Dr. Emmett Brown's lab assistant, wore one of these coats, along with a bow tie, in the video encyclopedia files featured in the closing live-action segments of Back to the Future: The Animated Series (1991-92).
Doc himself usually wore a lab coat during the opening and closing live-action segments of the show.
Behind the scenes
- The lab coat worn by Bill Nye in Back to the Future: The Animated Series — and later in his own science show, Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993-98) — was actually pale blue, which would usually appear white on-screen.[1] This was because pure white tends to be too bright for television cameras and, under studio lights, causes a glare on-screen.
