Marshal Strickland's office, bearing the sign GONE TO HAYSVILLE FOR HANGING OF STINKY LOMAX.

"He [Marty] stopped when he saw he was outside the marshal's office. The place looked like it was closed up tight. There was even a sign on the front door: / 'The Marshal has gone to Haysville to witness the hanging of Stinky Lomax.' "
— From Back to the Future Part III by Craig Shaw Gardner (quote, page 63)

Marshal James Strickland's office was a building in Hill Valley in 1885.

On September 3 of that year, a sign was posted on the office door announcing the hanging of Stinky Lomax at Haysville; and that the Marshal would be out of town during the event.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The wording of the sign on the office door in Craig Shaw Gardner's novelization is longer than that seen on-screen (see 'Quote' above).
