Match was one of the three high school boys who made up Biff Tannen's gang in 1955.
Biography[]
"Match" got his nickname from a distinctive character trait; he often had a match sticking out of his mouth, the end of which he would chew on. Whether he thought doing this made him look cool or tough, or both, was never determined.
Match seemed just as mean-spirited as Biff, but seemed content to let Biff boss him and the other guys around (perhaps because Biff was the only one of them with a car).
Along with Skinhead and 3-D, the adult Match served as one of Biff's bodyguards at the Pleasure Paradise Hotel and Casino in the ABC timeline 1985A. He wore a big cowboy hat.
It remains unclear as to whether Match was still living in Hill Valley in 1985 and 2015.
Behind the scenes[]
- He was never referred to by his real name or his nickname. His nickname is only given in the films' novelizations, screenplays and credits.
- Match was portrayed by actor Billy Zane, whose most famous role was as the snobbish Cal Hockley in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. Actress Elsa Raven, who played the Clock Tower lady, had a lesser role (Ida Strauss) in Titanic as well.
- Match is also Billy Zane's first cinematic role.
- In Back to the Future: The Game released by Telltale Games in 2010-2011, several new characters are introduced, including Biff's gangster father Kid Tannen and his own trio of cronies, one of whom, who seems to be his right-hand man, is called "Matches". It is unknown whether or not there is any relation between Matches and Match.
- Match has no dialogue in the first film, apart from the exclamation "SHIT!" by the whole gang just as they are about to crash into the manure truck.
