Powerlacing shoes were a type of auto-lacing shoe. Nike had manufactured a line of powerlacers named the Air MAG.
Marty McFly wore a pair of Nike powerlacing shoes while posing as his son Martin McFly, Jr. in 2015.
Behind the scenes
- The shoes were designed in consultation with Nike, and were originally intended to be worn by slamball players. However, this scene was considered too expensive and never filmed, so the shoes were instead made part of Marty McFly Jr.'s clothing.
- Moreover, few scenes were also filmed showing cast wearing Levis shoes.[citation needed]
- Although the self-lacing shoes appeared to be complicated technology, with remote controls and small motors, designed specifically for the film, Bob Gale explained in the commentary to the second film that the special effect was actually quite simple. The first shot was of Marty putting on the shoes and placing his feet on the ground. For the second shot, the prop shoes were bolted to a platform made of fake asphalt, with the laces running down through holes. On cue, a stagehand would pull the laces tight and a light would switch on, illuminating the Nike logo. Electronic sound effects were added later to complete the illusion.

Actuality
- In 2008, Nike released a limited run of 300 pairs of Hyperdunk McFly shoes that were inspired by the powerlacing shoes.
- In 2010, Nike applied for a patent of the powerlacing shoes, suggesting they could soon become an actual product.[1] A woman named Blake Bevin has also developed shoes like these and is currently seeing if they could be manufactured.[2]
- At the beginning of 2015, Nike confirmed that powerlacing shoes will come out to the market later in the year.[3]
