Reno, Nevada is where Arthur McFly and Sylvia Miskin were married on October 12, 1931 in the timeline altered by Marty's actions in the past. Reno is the second-largest city in Nevada today, but was the largest city in the state at the time, as well as a common destination for anyone in need of a quick marriage (or divorce).
At the time, Arthur was working at the Hill Valley Science Exposition, and (due to interference by Marty) was forced into firing Trixie from her role of Techne due to her being a Canadian citizen. Later that night, he took her to Reno to marry her (five years earlier than they were supposed to wed), thus making her an American Citizen (and allowing her to return to her role as Techne).
It is about twenty-six miles northwest of Virginia City, where Martin McFly was stabbed and killed with a Bowie knife after being goaded into a fight, sometime before Marty arrived in 1885.
In the real world, one of the three gold-plated DeLoreans is on display at the National Automobile Museum in Reno.
