A common saying in the past, particularly in Victorian times, was that children were better "seen and not heard".

When the Brown family and Marty visited Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, a child outside the town social building suggested they play 'Seen and not heard', a game in which they remain quiet for as long as possible. Jules was confident that he would win.
