The Sierra Nevada are a range of mountains in California. Hill Valley was located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Behind the scenes

Another town at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada is named Lone Pine, the same name of the mall after Marty McFly returns to 1985 in Back to the Future. Lone Pine is also along U.S. Route 395, which runs through Hill Valley.
