Graysback

The back cover of Grays Sports Almanac. Slamball is the seventh sport listed.

Slamball was a ball sport played in the 21st century in an anti-gravity magnetic field.

History[]

Players wore high-top electronic shoes that lit up when they entered that field to signal when they touched the game floor.[1]

It was invented and already popular before 2001, since it was one of the sports listed on the back cover of Grays Sports Almanac. It was one of Douglas J. Needles' favorite sports in 2015, according to the on-screen datafile captions during his video telephone call to Marty McFly.

The slamball playoffs were billed in both the INSIDE SPORTS box-out in the top left-hand corner and the Newsline column on the front page of the October 22, 2015 issue of USA Today. According to the latter, they were due to begin "this evening in Denver".

Behind the scenes[]

  • Robert Zemeckis devised the sport of slamball and planned to show the sport being played, but the scene would have cost too much to film. Nevertheless, the design for the shoes was the origin of Marty's power-lacing shoes.[2]

Actuality[]

  • The real game of slamball using trampolines was developed in the mid 1990s by Mason Gordon, a few years after Back to the Future Part II used the name. Two seasons of the sport aired on the Spike TV network from 2002 to 2003.
