The speedometer in the DeLorean time machine was altered alongside the rating of the vehicle's engine to allow the time machine to reach a higher speed; in the case of time travel, 88 miles per hour needed to be reached. Initially, the DeLorean had a top speed of roughly 75 mph.
A digital speedometer was also used in synchronization with the analog speedometer to allow the driver to measure the speed exactly.
By 1985 due to "Soft" Metric Conversion in early 1980's America the speedometer displayed Kilometers per hour in smaller figures
