Brief synopsis

While playing putt-putt golf, Marty angers Jennifer by making fun of her hairdo (which he caused to look dreadful), and, worse, canceling their plans for pizza and movies in favor of a date with Liz (a snobbish, nasty girl in their class). Marty stops by the Browns' house to borrow money for a haircut to go out with Liz. No one is home and Marty uses an unperfected hair-cutting invention to save money. The device causes Marty's hair to drastically change styles instantaneously, and frequently. Einstein communicates with Marty that the Browns are at Mega Monster Mountain, the local amusement park, goes to the park and finds Jules and Verne. Clara and Doc, frustrated by the overly high prices of the park, have gone off for some lemonade at another fair -- the 1904 World's Fair Exposition in St. Louis.

Using the locomotive, Marty and the boys travel to June 29, 1904, to find Doc and Clara. Marty needs Doc's help in fixing the hilarious effects of the hair cutting machine. At the fair, P.T. Tannen kidnaps Marty and displays him in a side-show as a "curiosity of nature". Doc, Clara and the boys save Marty and head home. Marty breaks his date with Liz (who has already found someone else, rich boy Milton Van Conrad III, to take her out) and apologizes to Jennifer for making fun of her hairdo.

Plot

Behind the scenes

  • This episode was directed by BTTF co-creator Bob Gale, who grew up in St. Louis.
  • Mark Valenti wrote the story and the screenplay.
  • In the live action segment with Christopher Lloyd, Doc is watching the local minor-league baseball team, the "Hill Valley Dreamers", who are playing against the "Riverburg Big Dudes".
  • In 1904, Doc spots the Jules Verne Train, which Marty and the boys brought from 1992. Doc thinks that it's an imitation, copied by "that guy in the patent office who laughed at me in 1895". This initially seems to suggest that Doc patented the train in 1895, although this does not make sense, as Doc would not ever want to publicize time travel, so a patent would have no purpose.

P.T. Tannen: "Sure I do! It's a free country."

Jennifer: "Just stopping by on your way to the country club?"
