Assumptions

We know nothing about additional temporal duplicates being sent to the future with all other trips to the past. Only the one involving Doc getting struck by lightning and sending him back to 1885 created a temporal duplicate in 2025. I would advise that the additional material be removed. -- Riffsyphon1024 23:26, November 5, 2011 (UTC)

True, the only known instance is the temporal duplicate created by the lightning bolt accident, which sent the DeLorean and Doc 70 years backwards through time, while sending a temporal duplicate of the DeLorean 70 years into the future. Doc doesn't say anything about a duplicate of himself, but since the original Doc retrieved the duplicate time machine himself, it is safe to assume only the time machine was duplicated. Still not clear, is that video game stuff on here canon or non-canon? McFord 15:43, March 27, 2012 (UTC)

Theories

Based on the only known duplication, my theory is that the time travel accidentally activated by the lightning bolt sent Doc to the date set on the display, but since the lightning held 1.21 GW, and the mr. Fusion device also provided 1.21 GW, the time circuits were overloaded, sending the DeLorean to both the set time and the same ammount of time in the other direction (roughly, but it's back 70 years, 10 months and 11 days (Jan 1st 1885), and forward a maximum of 70 years, 1 month and 19 days (Dec 31st 2025, only the year is specified)), while only carrying the passenger to the set destination.
