A test pattern or test card was a screen represented by a card that was filmed and broadcast in between programs, usually during off-air times at night. It was used to calibrate and align the camera. One particular test pattern featured an Indian.

On the morning of November 13, 1955, a test pattern displayed on the screen of Emmett Brown's television set before switching over to Howdy Doody.
