"Only if it turns out that reality is actually nothing more than a holographic illusion created by the interplay of subatomic particles on a vast two-dimensional membrane."

This article covers a subject that has been deemed non-canon by either the author or the Back to the Future licensees, and thus should not be taken as a part of the "real" Back to the Future universe.

ThingMeme was a popular social network, which allowed inanimate objects to post selfies over the internet.

History[]

ThingMeme was developed by GriffTech, with finances secured from Douglas J. Needles on June 13, 2032.

On October 21, 2045, Griff Tannen uploaded a virus to ThingMeme that displayed the word 'butthead' on all devices around the world. The virus short circuited the Mr. Fusion network and led to explosions in the tiny nuclear reactors in all one hundred million of the units.

As Dr. Emmett Brown rewrote that timeline by preventing the invention of the Mr. Fusion, it's unclear whether GriffTech and ThingMeme existed in the new timeline.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Social networks, the internet, and selfies were part of the story to bring 2015 more in line with how it actually exists in the real world.
  • The name refers to a meme, which is an idea that spreads from person to person within a culture. Memes are a popular internet phenomenon.

Actuality[]

  • Social networks such as this do exist, although thankfully it is not possible to use one to take control of all of the world's devices.
