Tobacco was made by curing the leaves of a tobacco plant. As it contained the stimulant nicotine, it was often taken as a drug, either through inhalation via smoking a cigar or a cigarette, or through chewing it directly.
In 1939, a vendor sold Camel brand cigarettes at the New York World's Fair. He tried to sell a box to Verne and Clara Brown, claiming that they were good for the inhalation area dubbed the "T-zone". He began stating Camel's slogan of "T for Taste, T for Throat. Camels will suit you to a T", before he was cut off by Dr. Emmett Brown.
On November 5, 1955, when the Baines family was watching television and eating dinner, there was a commercial break before the start of The Honeymooners, which featured a commercial for Sir Walter Randolph brand cigarettes. In this commercial, a doctor endorsed the product after performing three consecutive lung operations.
On November 12, 1955, while sitting in Doc's car outside the Enchantment Under the Sea dance at Hill Valley High School, Marty McFly was surprised to find out that his mother, Lorraine Baines, drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes.
In 1983, in the alternate timeline where an elderly Biff Tannen traveled from 2015 to 1955 with a sports almanac to make his younger self rich, the Biff Tannen Museum required smoking in order to enter. Doc, who was seeking information about Biff Tannen's date of birth, was required to light and hold a cigarette to enter, even though he was a non-smoker.
