Toby Baines was the fourth child of Sam and Stella Baines. He was born in 1951.[1]

On November 5, 1955, he sat at the dinner table with his family and Marty McFly, whom his father had hit with the car earlier that day. He remained silent while the guest was present.

In 1986, when Joey Baines was released from prison, Marty McFly investigated Joey's original crime. One person Marty asked was Toby, who said Joey was "always a problem child" and "just out to get what he wanted as quick as he could." However, since Toby didn't know the details of Joey's arrest, Marty moved on to ask other people.

On May 10, he attended his family's celebration of Joey's return from prison. However, he accused his brother of having accomplices, which Joey denied. Joey then left the house, feeling he was not welcome.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • In an early draft of Back to the Future Part II, Toby in 1967 was depicted as a young man about to turn 18[3] and looking forward to participating in the Vietnam War.[4] At that time, Toby's mother wanted him to go to college, but his father dismissed the idea on account of Toby's low grades.[5]
  • The name "Toby" had previously been used by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale in their 1980 comedy, Used Cars — for a talented dog owned by Kurt Russell's character, Rudy Russo.
  • As with Joey Baines, the actor who portrayed Toby Baines was not given any on-screen credit. Probably five or six at the time of filming, he would be approaching age 30 in 2008. He had no lines, and appears to be watching Lea Thompson and Michael J. Fox throughout the dinner scene.
