VCR stands for videocassette recorder.

VHS and Betamax were the two primary competing formats for this device. VHS was the dominant format and was the standard for commercial film media being released to the public from 1981 to 1997.

In 2015, VCRs were relegated to being sold at antique stores.

Behind the scenes

  • The "To Be Continued" screen was only added to the home release of Back to the Future. It was not originally included in the theatrical release, as a sequel was not originally planned.
  • The "Coming Summer 1990" screen was removed from the home release of Back to the Future Part II. However, it was retained in the 2010 and 2015 home releases of the film trilogy.
