VHS stands for Video Home System. From 1981 to 1997, VHS was the standard for commercial media being released to the public. DVD became the standard in 1998.
In 2015, VHS videocassettes of films were relegated to being sold at antique shops such as Blast from the Past.
Behind the scenes[]
- The "To Be Continued" screen caption was only added to the home release of Back to the Future. It was not originally included in the theatrical release, as a sequel was not originally planned.
- The "Coming Summer 1990" screen caption was removed from the home release of Back to the Future Part II. However, it was retained in the 2010 and 2015 home releases of the film trilogy.
- In Ritorno al futuro, the Italian dub of Back to the Future, Marty McFly says to Milton Baines in 1955 that he saw the first-run "Man from Space" episode of The Honeymooners on a VHS videocassette. At the time of the movie's release, Italy had yet to adopt the policy of re-airing episodes of television shows, so no Italian word existed for 'rerun'.
- Marty was a streetwise video pirate in the Back to the Future first draft screenplay, running a secret black market operation with Professor Emmett "Prof" Brown. This concept was dropped from the final version as Universal Studios refused to make a movie where the hero was a video pirate.
