Vacuum tubes were used on the third version of the DeLorean time machine, after Dr. Emmett Brown and Marty McFly recovered it from the Delgado Mine in 1955.

History

To replace key parts from 1985 that would have existed in 1955, including the destroyed time circuit control microchip, Doc worked from the schematic diagram included with the repair instructions to fashion a box-frame unit that was attached with straps to the hood of the car, which included a vacuum tube assemblage that helped control the time circuits.

Vacuum tubes had also formed part of the assemblage of one of Doc's earlier 1955 inventions, the brain-wave analyzer.^[1]

Behind the scenes

The box-frame unit unit strapped to the hood of the DeLorean is referred to as both the "hood component box" and "hood box" in DeLorean Time Machine: Doc Brown's Owner's Workshop Manual.
