"An anarchist! A foreign agitator bent on sowing chaos and destruction at the Hill Valley Science Expo!"
Edna Strickland, referring to "Yakov"

Yakov Smirnoff (born January 24, 1951 in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union) was a comedian who emigrated in the 1980s from the Soviet Union to the United States, and whose routine consisted of jokes about Communism.

Edna Strickland "reveals" Marty McFly's "real name"

Alias of Marty McFly[]

For a full biography, see the article on Marty McFly.

Upon returning to 1931 from 1986 in the alternate timeline where Emmett Brown and Edna Strickland controlled Hill Valley as first and second Citizen Brown, Citizen Brown referred to Marty McFly as "Yakov Smirnoff". He did so since he was cooperating with Edna Strickland to try to keep the young Emmett Brown from participating in the Hill Valley Science Exposition.

To further his deception, Citizen Brown told Edna Strickland that "Yakov" was an anarchist who came to ruin the science expo. Edna relayed the news to Danny Parker, who closed the exhibit to Emmett's Electrokinetic levitator. The later revelation that she was the arsonist of the Hill Valley speakeasy resulted in her request to close Emmett's exhibit to be denied.

During later encounters with Marty, she continued to refer to him as Yakov or Mr. Smirnoff rather than his chosen alias.

Behind the scenes[]

Following the examples in the Back to the Future trilogy in which Marty chooses the name of a real person from the future (such as Calvin Klein and Clint Eastwood) for an alias, Edna Strickland would not have heard of Yakov Smirnoff in 1931 as he wasn't born until 20 years later.
